Historic Photo of the Month -- Evansport school
Evansport School Children00102

The date Evansport’s first school was established is unknown. Directors of School District Number 1, Tiffin Township, purchased Lot 104 on the east side of West Street, north of Fourth (Mill) Street, for $30 on March 13, 1843. A schoolhouse was constructed on the site by 1847.
Around 1887 a two-story brick school was built east of the Evansport United Methodist church. The building’s upper story was removed circa 1920, but classes continued in the downsized structure until the late 1940s.
In 1955, the building was sold to Evansport Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3985, and it served as the group’s post home until 1991. The former school building was razed in 2004, and the site is today occupied by the Tiffin Township Fire Station.
What is believed to be a group of pupils and two adults—probably teachers—pose for posterity on the west side of the Evansport school in this historic photograph. The 48-star U.S. flags the children are holding date this photo to 1912 or later.
This vintage image was donated to the Stryker Area Heritage Council by Tim Kays.
